Vocabulary acquisition and use

What is oral language?

Oral language, also referred to as spoken language, includes speaking, listening, and non-verbal communication – how humans communicate with one another. Oral language skills are the foundation for communication and at the heart of listening and reading comprehension, serving as a predictor for both. Early spoken language skills are the most significant predictor of literacy levels.

Vocabulary acquisition and use

What is it?

Vocabulary acquisition is the process of learning new words and in doing so adding to and expanding language (words used and/or understood). Children learn the meanings of most words indirectly, through everyday oral and written language experiences.
